I had seen these in the grocery store waaaaay back in August and was intrigued. Here was a Halloween candy that was not only "gummy" but also had (what I'm going to call) 'play value.'
Back in the day, I was a huge Skull Crushers fan. They were essentially a white chocolate skull with red ooze in the middle so when you bit it 'candy blood' oozed out. My friends and I were thrilled.
So that same kid (who's buried deep inside this old skin) was thrilled to see a gummy zombie head and gummy brain that you could peel the skin off of. Yes please. I'd like one ticket to the gross ride, please.
Welp, proving once again that package graphics should not be believed, this left a lot to be desired.
The ziplock pouch is labeled 3.5 oz which gets you about 20 candies.
Of the 20 candies in my pouch, 15 were brains, and only FIVE were zombie heads.
The bag itself has a lot of vibrant colors and graphics.
There's a giant zombie looking like he fell out of Laika's ParaNorman movie (a great Halloween watch reco, BTW). There's a bad clip art haunted house in the background in purple with orange windows. There are bats flapping about, an old tree, some gravestones and a graveyard fence., and then extreme close-up photos of the brain & zombie gummies, one in a state of 'peeling'--- as if the flesh of the zombie head had been peeled down to expose its gummy brain. Gross. Annnnnnd awesome if you're a kid.
The back of the bag essentially just has the photo close-ups the candy with nutritional info.
As for the peel-function: The 'peeling' is really just picking apart your gummy candy. See the pic above for a zombie head unpeeled on the right, and the 'peeled' zombie head on the left. They didn't really seem like they were meant to be 'peeled.' It's like if you bought a Butterfinger candy bar and then were told to 'peel' off the chocolate coating. You can do it, but it's not really something the candy is meant to do. Just eat the candy.
As for the gummy candies themselves, the flavor is lacking. Nothing as zesty as, say, a Jolly Rancher gummy. Just sorta a mild 'strawberry' flavor. They almost feel like they should have a liquid in the middle, but it's just extra squishy gummy.
These really were lacking in my opinion. The package did the heavy lifting (essentially lifting it off the shelf and putting it in my cart). The 'peelable' functionality seems like something someone made up while watching a kid pick apart an inferior gummy candy in a focus group.
I don't recommend them and I certainly won't be buying them in future Halloweens.
Booooooo (and not in a spooky ghost kinda way...).
