Well one of my favorite Halloween-adjacent films is getting a 3D Halloween re-release!
PARANORMAN, the stop-motion-animated classic from 2012 is returning to theaters in celebration of the LAIKA Studios' 20th Anniversary. Included in the week-long showings will be a new, CG-animated short titled "ParaNorman: The Thrifting."
I call this a Halloween-adjacent film because it contains all the ingredients of a Halloween classic:
- Ghosts.
- A kid who can see dead people.
- A kid who's a big fan of zombies.
- Zombies.
- A hockey mask.
- A snippet of John Carpenter's iconic Halloween score.
- A New England town built around a history of witches (but it's definitely NOT Salem... ahem).
- Stop-Motion animation.
- A girl with psychic powers.
- A group of young people in a Scooby-Doo-like van.
- References to B-movies and horror movies.
- A siege like setting.
It's funny, and sweet, and scary, and --frankly-- the only thing it DOESN'T have is any Halloween in it.
Close enough, says I.
And therefore I consider it Halloween-adjacent... and a film I watch almost every year.
Lastly: look at that AMAZING poster.
There's scary fonts, and zombie skulls, and --chef's kiss--.
Well done graphic designer. Well done.
